How Does a Cold Air Intake Work and Why Should I Replace the One That Came With My Vehicle?
In a standard air intake system, air passes through a disposable paper filter and then flows into the engine through a complex system of tubing. K&N cold air intake systems provide a less restrictive path for airflow, increasing the volume of cool, oxygen-rich air into your engine. A performance air filter is paired with specially designed tubing and a custom air box or heat shield (engineered to protect the intake air from the heat of the engine), which in combination deliver a guaranteed increase in horsepower and torque.

Increased Horsepower & Torque- GuaranteedYes, K&N intakes really do increase horsepower and torque; in fact, it's guaranteed. Each intake kit undergoes significant testing to help ensure that the air filter and intake tube are positioned to deliver large increases in airflow and horsepower. |
Less Restriction = More Engine GrowlBy removing excess stock baffles, you get to enjoy a satisfying engine growl on acceleration that returns to quiet once at speed. The amount of growl is all in your hands… or should we say feet. Growl while accelerating on the open road and return to quiet as you drive through your neighborhood. |

No Substitution for the Original- The Difference a K&N Filter Makes in Your Vehicle
Increased performance starts with K&N’s reusable, air filter, which combines layers of pleated, breathable cotton with K&N’s signature red filter oil. Paper air filters, while efficient, can become quickly clogged as their pores fill with dirt and debris. K&N’s oiled cotton filter absorbs dirt and dust particles rather than physically blocking them. The tacky, oiled particles that collect in the filter become an asset to the filtration rather than an obstacle, capturing new particles entering the system while still allowing a high volume of airflow to pass through. This allows clean air to continue flowing into your engine.
Unlike disposable paper filters, which typically last for 12-15,000 miles before they must be replaced, the high-performance K&N filter included with your intake can go up to 75,000 miles before needing to be cleaned (under normal driving conditions).

---|---|---|---|
Why is Dyno Testing Important & How Can I Tell if It’s Accurate?K&N's air intake horsepower/torque testing is performed at our in-house facilities in Riverside, CA on wheel-based dynamometers and help provide a power estimate that is likely to more closely reflect real-world conditions than an engine-based dynamometer. K&N’s standard testing is designed to measure relative power differences on a vehicle with and without K&N products installed, and SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) correction factors are utilized to help ensure accuracy. If you notice horsepower claims from other manufacturers that seem too good to be true, we encourage you to do your own research. Check the dynamometer reports for vehicles, dates tested, and if correction factors are used. |
How Does a K&N Intake Protect Your Engine? Most disposable paper filters create a large amount of airflow restriction, as the openings in the filter media have to be extremely small to filter efficiently—which slows airflow. Because dust accumulates on the surface of the disposable filter and blocks the openings in the media, the filter will typically become increasingly more restrictive to airflow over time. Conversely, K&N oiled filters are engineered to become more efficient over their recommended service life as dirt and contaminants are integrated into the filter media, while still allowing a high volume of air through to the system. This allows you to continue to get the performance you expect from your K&N intake, while also being able to rely on the cutting-edge efficiency and protection that a K&N oiled air filter provides. |
What's the Difference Between a Roto-Molded and an Aluminum Intake Tube? Both a Roto-Molded and an Aluminum Intake Tube from K&N provide the same increase of air flow to your engine. It all comes down to how you want it to look in your vehicle. If you enjoy a more custom look under the hood, the Aluminum Tube is a great choice. |
What Does the Heat Shield Do and Is That Better Than a Closed Air Box?Both the custom heat shield and HDPE air box help protect the incoming air from the heat of your engine. They both have unique features and which one you choose is a personal preference based on those features. High-performance drivers may want an open filter element and heat shield for even greater airflow. Off-roaders may prefer an intake system with a custom air box, which helps protect against dust, dirt, and moisture and offers additional filter protection from extremely dirty environments or water crossings. Options with an enclosed air box give you the freedom to adventure while offering easy access to the air filter for quick cleaning and maintenance — no special tools required. |
Easy to Install
Installing an intake kit might seem intimidating, especially if it's your first DIY car modification, but thankfully you don't have to be a seasoned mechanic to successfully install a cold air intake yourself. While every kit is slightly different (since they are designed to be a perfect fit in the engine bay of specific year/make/models), installation can typically be completed in 60 minutes or less and requires only simple hand tools. Detailed, step-by-step instructions are included with each kit.

How does the K&N 57-1533 increase horsepower? By eliminating airflow obstruction in your engine. Restriction of air flow between an air filter and an engine robs even the most powerful engine of horsepower. K&N air intake kits virtually eliminate air path restriction by replacing the standard air filter and the entire air path to the engine. The aerodynamically engineered conduit that makes up the 57-1533 drives a massive amount of air into an engine, which translates into power. This conduit begins with an oversized conical high-flow air filter. This larger filter can fit into the engine compartment using factory holes and mounting points because the K&N 57-1533 replaces your stock intake tube, and air box. This provides more airflow at lower restriction than a standard filter, limited by the size of the factory air box. The oversize air filter also captures and holds more dirt, increasing the service life before a cleaning is required (up to 100,000 miles). The filter is also isolated from high engine temperature by a heat shield designed to lower the temperature of the air entering the engine, which increases horsepower.
The filter attaches to a rotationally molded tube made from nonmetallic interlaced high density polyethylene (HDPE). This allows for precision shaping of the tube to reduce turbulence and accelerate airflow into the engine. This is why some K&N tubes have unique shapes or indentations that are specifically engineered for each engine configuration. Finally, the tube is connected to the engine with adapters made from high strength materials such as silicon and reinforced nylon and ensures long life. Put all this together and you have the best high-flow intake system available today.
Street Legal
Many K&N intake systems are street legal in all 50 states and include a California Air Resource Board (CARB) Executive Order (EO) number that ensures the kit has been tested to comply with emissions standards. EO numbers apply to the kit as well as the year, make and model it is being installed on. Systems with no EO number are street legal in most states but may not be used on emissions controlled vehicles in the state of California or other states adopting California emission standards. Consult K&N's website to search by part to see which cold air intakes are CARB exempt for which vehicles.

Lesson learned for going cheap!
This time around bought the K&N CAI kit but was hesitant because it is literally 6 times the price of the last one I bought (7 times, if purchased elsewhere). As soon as I took it out of the box, the differences were obviously noticeable. The quality of everything from the filter, the tubing and even the bolts used for installation are much better. Now, I'm not going to make unverified claims of horsepower or miles-per-gallon as I have not had my truck dyno'd but I can say this. 1) The idle sound of my truck has improved dramatically. I have an aftermarket 6.1L Hemi cam with JBL Headers and Flowmaster Super-40 true-dual X-pipe exhaust setup. I didn't think the idle sound could get better but it did. Acceleration sounds amazing now. I've seen claims that people say they can hear a sucking sound but honestly, I've tried to hear it and cannot. My truck is by no means too loud to hear it either. I'm not one of those people who think a truck should make people deaf when passing by but a Hemi should sound like a Hemi! 2) Acceleration is more responsive and the engine reacts much better than stock. Mid-range accel (around 40-80mph) is the biggest difference in my opinion. 3) I've noticed a slight pickup when climbing hills, especially with a load or trailer attached. Cruise Control does not up/downshift as much anymore in hilly areas either. I've attempted to judge the gas mileage difference using the built in computer on my truck but honestly it is next to impossible to get ideal and exact situations without using a Dyno in a windless enviroment.
Note: Keep your factory air intake just incase you get another vehicle your K&N fits down the line. Save you some money! At the very least you could resell it and it should still be in great condition. Mine is almost new, including the original filter (properly cared for), nearly 2 years later.
Last week I purchased my second K&N CAI kit for my other car. Once again as with our truck, a definite difference in idle and acceleration sound. My exhaust is still stock on this vehicle, much quieter than my truck and yet again, I cannot notice the "sucking sound" people claim to hear. All air intakes make a sound when under high RPM's (obviously, more air is going in and quicker).
Also, Amazon's "Does it fit my vehicle?" database shows this does not fit a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500, Quadcab 5.7L SLT 4x4, when in fact it is the exact model recommend according to K&N's website. It installed perfectly in my truck. It's also much cheaper at Amazon.com (by about $75) than it was at any other website I could find.
What's most impressive with the K&N is the improvement you'll realize in fuel economy. My WRX stickers with 22-25 city/highway MPG but now I can see 30MPG at well over 70MPH. This means that a K&N system will literally pay for itself in fuel savings and foregone paper filter replacement costs (every 15,000 miles).
This particular K&N kit will noticeably increase the WRX's sound coming from the engine bay - a whitle/horn-like thromb on heavy throttle and you'll hear the boost bypass on heavy throttle lift-off. To balance this perhaps-overwhelming sound, I'd recommend [with any Subaru] the installation of aftermarket exhaust. ***Or - alternatively, I was absolutely delighted to discover that the WRX's boxer engine is so smooth-sounding that you can unleash [almost exactly] the sound of an aftermarket exhaust kit by loosing the bolts between the mufflers and the exhaust pipes coming from the catcons and then install 3-5 washers as spacers to bleed some exhaust tone right before the mufflers. Amazingly, I've seen zero disadvantage to this trick technique (no harsh sound or fumes - just pure boxer engine sound!). I bought some stainless steel exhaust tips to put the icing on the cake and have been really impressed.
Installation is easy if you have a few tools (those needed are listed on the K&N website). I would highly recommend K&N cold air intake.
After installing this item, I could tell a noticeable difference between the two. The ram has more power at high RPM. I really wish I would have purchased this 20,000 miles ago!!
The kit installed without issue. The instructions were adequate. And fit much more nicely than the old cheaper cai.
FYI, I have a exhaust, the cai, email tune, 2800 stall t.c.
