I've always wanted to make my own beef jerky, so I tried a few online recipes and this thing did a great job making jerky. I tried a few different cuts of beef. It turned out fantastic, at half the price of store-bought products.
Still haven't decided if I will keep it.
Let's start with the big picture. Does it work? Yep, it does. If you're looking for a quick decision, go ahead and make that purchase. But if you're curious about the ins and outs, here's the scoop.
First off, let's talk cleanup. Brace yourself because it's not the most glamorous part of the process. It's like you need a mini cleaning marathon after every use. Maybe it's my culinary prowess (or lack thereof), but dismantling and cleaning this thing takes more time than I'd like to admit. If you're all about quick and easy, this might irk you a bit.
Now, onto the results. It's a bit of a hit or miss. The temperature control is on point, especially for lean beef – it comes out like jerky perfection. But, and this is a big but, when I tried throwing other foods into the mix, it turned into a bit of a gamble. Some things come out awesome, while others, well, not so much. Maybe I'm still learning the ropes, or maybe it's just a finicky machine.
Speaking of trying different foods, experimentation is the name of the game. Lean beef? Ace. But venture into the unknown, and your results may vary. Fruits and veggies seem to have a steeper learning curve. It's like the dehydrator and I are still figuring each other out.
In conclusion, if you're all about lean beef jerky and don't mind spending a little extra time in cleanup land, go for it. But if you're dreaming of dehydrated pineapple or apple chips every weekend, be prepared for a bit of a learning curve. It's not foolproof, and the results can be a bit finicky. But hey, that's the fun of the kitchen experiment, right?
Besides it's struggle to dry food, it's toy-size. I guess this is Shrinkflation at work so they can keep the price down or something, but this is EZ bake oven size and while it's a nice looking little unit, it doesn't hold much and it shouldn't take days to dry a few onions.
It was a gift and I hate to return a gift, but I will put it's return price and add to it to buy a larger unit that will dry things in hours as it should, vs. one that takes days. This can't be good for my electric bill, and if I had a lot to dry, the rest of it would be rotting while I waited for this one small batch. Dang :(

One thing to note: if dehydrating sweet potatoes for your dog, parboil them first so they taste good and aren’t full of starch. A lot of foods that you would dehydrate should be cooked a bit first.
