Color WILL turn out different on different fabrics
Followed the instructions and I actually used a huge stainless steel mixing bowl on the stove top for this instead of the awesome stock pot I didn’t have and wouldn’t have wanted to ruin even if I did have. First note- dye did NOT stain my mixing bowl, counters, stove, or sink and I made plenty of messes. Second note- dye does not turn the same color on different fabrics. All of these items were stark white when they went into the bowl of boiling dye. All went in at the same time and all came out at the same time but all did not end up the same color. Shoes are canvas and they came out a dark blood red, which is what I wanted. Gloves are satin and came out burgundy. Belt is nylon and came out burgundy. Bow is polyester and came out a light burgundy. Gonna do color remover on the last 3 and try a different dye/color to see if I can get them close to the color of the boots. I chose to dye white things so they’d all be the same shade of red so they’d actually match for a costume. Didn’t work out so hot for me. Gave it 4 stars, though, because it does very well and all the way through. The color is deep and well penetrated. Also, not sure why other people said they were dealing with a bad odor. Mine had no odor at all. However that dye you get at Walmart smells terrible and stinks up the whole house. You know the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent results with stovetop method
Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2017
I recently bought a pair of pure white, full seat riding breeches on eBay that were badly misrepresented. The seat was ruined and they were not usable. I happened to have another pair of breeches that I didn't like but had a perfectly usable seat, so to try and save the eBay breeches from going in the trash, I decided I'd try and put a new seat on them and dye them a color to match the replacement seat. (Note: I dyed the breeches first and then replaced the seat material, so the seat material you see in the finished photo is not dyed with idye)

This was my first attempt ever at dyeing anything but I figure the breeches were headed for the trash anyway, if I messed them up, there was no loss. The fabric content on the breeches (see photo of pre-dyed, white tag on the breeches) was a mix of cotton, poly and spandex so I bought matching idye color packets in idye for cotton and idye for poly fabrics, as well as a packet of idye color fixative and did the stove top method. The cooking color was very dark but they lightened up after rinsing and drying (which I was glad about). Also, because of the spandex content, I decided to keep the dye pot "almost boiling" but not bring it to a full boil like the instructions suggest. I cooked for about 1/2 hour (instructions recommend 1/2 to 1 hour). As you can see from the photos, the results were dramatic! I now have a perfectly beautiful pair of riding breeches and there is one less clothing item in a land fill! Yay! The idye packets also say it's safe for my septic system - another big plus.

I can't speak for color fastness yet as I've only washed them twice since dyeing them but I do love the color I used (gunmetal, which has a blue base and turned out a deep navy for my difficult to dye fabric). In fact, I love the results so much, I definitely plan on using this method again for future breeches! So happy with idye and highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE this stuff for FLEECE!

Which is 100% polyester. This was an expensive designer top but I’ve always hated the color. Before it was a straight up sage green. Think actual sage leaves/herb - pale boring gray green.

Instructions suggest boiling water for 30-1hr. but you can’t boil synthetic fabrics. Online suggests warm water only but I used my very hot tap water in my stainless steel kitchen sink. It comes out at 120°, was closer to 90-100° when I added my top to it and the dye. Did this for 30 minutes but I think I could’ve done it less than it would’ve looked the same. The color took quickly.

I did use the whole bottle of GRAY COLOR which is probably more than I needed but it came out amazingly well! Just gray did the trick, I didn’t need any red to offset the green.

What impresses me the most is how beautiful the buttons came out! They were also sage green, the exact same color as the fabric. There’s still new looking and translucent, just gray! Because polyester is actually plastic fabric, and this dye does dye all plastic (and many other materials), plastic buttons will color beautifully.

Just take care, because of that, if you use a rubber stopper and your sink, it’s going to turn this color lol.

5.0 out of 5 stars Decent job
Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2022
I had a polyester bubblegum pink satin shirt, on which the colors bled, and this was the closest color dye I could find. So I bleached, washed, and dried it. Then I used this dye, the full packet, in a stainless steel pot and boiled the shirt for half an hour. I thought if I boiled for half an hour vs an hour, the color would be lighter. However, the shirt came out fuschia/hot pink. Perhaps I should have used less dye. I think if you boil for an hour it helps the color set. The pot was big enough for the shirt but not big enough for the fabric to flow freely. When I let the shirt air dry, the color was even but the fabric did not have the sheen of satin. However, the sheen returned after I wet the shirt and ironed while wet. Then I put it in the dryer for 20 minutes to seal the color. The color was slightly uneven, which could be due to the small pot or, more likely, ironing while wet (which could have been uneven). Still the shirt is in the same color family that I wanted and much improved over the original. I recommend the product.
