Great game for a small group - hours of fun - update: Relaunched!!!
I think it's time for a re-write of this review :) Just to make it clearer on what this game is all about and why people love it. I'll break it out by main and expansions.HeroQuest - The game is played on a board and although the board remains the same, there are tiles that block of sections, doors that open up, secret doors, furniture, traps and monsters that change for each quest you play. 5 players max per game with one being Mentor (think of Mentor as the Dungeon Master - he knows what's going on and the rules and lays out the board as the hero's explore). Each quest the four heroes (Barbarian, Elf, Wizard and Dwarf) have a quest to complete and escape alive. Movement is by roll of the dice for the heroes but monsters have a set movement value. Combat is decided by dice roll - there are white combat dice and depending on the hero/weapon a set number of dice are rolled and the same goes for the monsters. The elf and wizard also have spells and some monsters will have chaos spells. As the heroes explore the board, they come across traps, treasure or wandering monsters. The heroes work together to achieve the goal of the quest and it's interesting to see how they will manage. Game play can be quick depending on the heroes actions and you can do several quest in a single sitting or if you are pressed for time you can probably get a quest done within 30 minutes or so assuming you don't have to read the rules. It's not like D&D with a lot of rules to memorize and once you're done with the initial quests you can create your own or get one of the expansion packs (although now they cost a lot because they are rare).HQ Advance Quest (Dark Company) - The version I have of this is very similar to my original HQ game above except monsters are 1 hit point. This version also comes with an additional mass quest "Dark Company" that play across 4 game boards!Keller's Keep - Additional quest which added more artifacts (but smaller card as they were on the back cover of the quest book) and although it came with additional monsters they were just to add to the existing orcs, goblins and fimirs included in the original box. This also introduced the entrance and exit doors (wooden and iron). There was also Trap door tiles to move from one room to another.Return of the Witch Lord - Additional quest again with more artifacts (same card type as in Kellar's Keep) and had additional skeletons, zombies and mummies. Also has the wooden and iron doors and had some room overlays.Barbarian Quest Pack - Quest book for The Frozen Horror. Had additional cards and introduced Men-At-Arms (US versions) to the game. There are some solo quest for the Barbarian. There are also new monsters and not just a variation of existing monsters. The new cards were the right size to fit with the existing cards from the main game and tiles were also better. There were some rule clarification also included as well as new potions that could be purchased by the heroes. Also more room overlays.Elf Quest Pack - Quest book for Mage of the Mirror. Like the Barbarian quest, had new monsters, hero's could be turned into werewolves under Mentor's control, new cards, new potions and more room overlays. The last quest uses two game boards! Also had solo quest for the Elf hero. Also introduced elf magic cards that the Elf hero could choose to use. Also, both Barbarian and Elf quest packs included female versions of the hero (i.e. female barbarian and female elf). The quest packs were of better quality than the Keller's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord in my opinion.Wizards of Morcar (Europe) - I bought this a while back but never actually got a group together to play through it. This expansion was not sold in the US to my knowledge and I bought online English version. There were Men-at-Arms in this pack along with four "wizards" (monsters) and new spell cards. There were a few more tiles as well.Against the Ogre Horde (Europe) - again bought an English version from overseas to add to my collection. This one I found unopened for a reasonable amount but have of course opened it as I am nuts and didn't know it would be worth so much now! This had Ogre monsters included and some room overlays. There are also tiles, stone doors and I believe amulets as well as a Ogre throne (just the cardboard piece and you take apart the original throne and use the sides for the Ogre throne).Adventures Design Kit - extra character pads but much larger than the original pads included in the game, Adventure Design Booklet, sticker sheets. This was for making your own Hero Quest adventures. To be honest I think I just bought it to add to my collection as it doesn't serve much piratical use. You can pretty much do the same with graph paper if needed - sticker are only going to get you so far before you run out after all.Overall a great game and you can still find resource online. There were a few adventures in Games Workshop magazines which I have not played or even looked at as well as numerous sites by fans of the game. I recently pulled this out from storage to see if my oldest nephew had everything in the box set he bought from online. I even saw one go online from a Pawnbroker for 29.99! If you find one at a reasonable price, get it! Even if you decide it's not for you, you'll probably still be able to get your money back by reselling!Update - 9/2020 Hasbro is preparing a relaunch. The Hasbro Pulse site is taking pledges for the relaunch of the game. North America only (US and Canada) although it sounds like the shipping for Canada cost just as much as the game so it may not be worth it if you are outside the US. Two options, one at 99.99 and the other for 149.99 (includes Keller's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord) so if you have been wanting one, here's a chance at a brand new exclusive one. Of course you can wait to see what will be offered from Hasbro later as well as I would imagine they would offer the game via mass production at a cheaper price but without the "extra's" being offered currently. The crowdfunded project is already close to it's target so it definitely should happen!
