Cons
Battery life is fine and with average daily use I get a full day. But on days with more time in actual apps I do need to recharge. But it recharges to 100% in about an hour.
So this is a beautiful phone that I honestly am thrilled to use on a daily basis. I am no longer jealous of those with I-phones or just higher end phones. Moto G has raised their game here to new levels. This phone is so worth the price and compared to it my old Moto G5 Plus looks like a miniature toy. There is no comparison between the two. Transferring of data from the old to new phone happened in minutes. Get a screen protector and case for this one. The phone truly deserves it. Plus though very attractive the phone is slippery. I cannot recommend this phone enough. This is a superior and extremely impressive phone that cannot be beat.
I'd had the G5 plus for 18 months and up until this past month I really liked it's performance. I'm just grateful the old girl held on until Black Friday when I was able to snag a Moto G7 for $179 on Amazon.
The transfer of Apps and Data went smoothly and both phones had the same size SIM card (nano) so that was easy. I did have to contact my service provider and update a few mobile settings for texting but that only took a few minutes and I was up and running.
"Running" is the best way to describe the past two days of putting the G7 through a battery of trials and tests. First off I was amazed at the speed and fluidity of this phone, the processor is way faster than any other Moto I've owned. I was also impressed with the battery life, at the end of the day I still had 34% after a full day of setting up, arranging Apps, downloading several new apps (which I wanted but didn't have the space for on the G5), I also spent several hours of checking out the bells and whistles the G7 possesses. Oh, and I viewed lots of YouTube vids.
I was also extremely impressed with the facial recognition and the fingerprint sensor, both have worked flawlessly with amazing speed (much more so than the fingerprint sensor on my old G5 Plus), I like the sensor much better being on the back of the G7 versus the front on the G5.
I didn't spend much time with the camera which is not a priority for me, but the pics I did take were pretty darn good. I love that this phone has 64 gb of internal storage and 4 gb of RAM, which is more than plenty for me and my needs. Not only does the performance stand out, the outward apperance and display of the G7 is very impressive IMO. The G7's sleek/stylish appearance and feel would lead one to believe this is a much more expensive phone than it actually is, also IMO. One last comment, I ordered a slim case because other reviewers remarked how slick the surface was on the G7, It is and I'm glad I did!!
I'm sure you can tell that I'm totally impressed with the G7, but will it last? Time will tell so if the need arises in the future due to unforeseen problems, I'll certainly update this review.
Another year later, we could have gone with the Galaxy S9, but the S7 was so problematic that I had serious concerns with another Samsung Galaxy phone. At the same time, we bought our teenager a Moto X4. While we complained about the Galaxys's battery life, her phone was lasting all day long.
Research was done, and the time came. We bought two Moto G7's. The transition was very simple thanks to Google's tools. Most settings were ported over, and most files were saved to our MicroSD cards which we moved over to our new phones.
The battery life on the Moto G7 is great. It's not impervious to heavy usage, but it will easily last a whole day with normal usage. The screen is beautiful and much larger than my previous phone. The performance is so much better than the Galaxy S7 that makes the change completely worthwhile. Google Maps is back to being snappy and responsive. My transit app launches very quickly. The fingerprint scanner is well placed on the back of the phone.
I have two gripes about the phone however. The first is a lack of wireless charging. I used that nearly exclusively with my Galaxy phone, but the Moto G7 lacks this feature. On the plus side, I can now use a magnetic car mount, which I could not due to interference with the wireless charging.
The camera is noticeably lower in quality compared to the S7. The colors are oversaturated and lack detail. I intend to replace the camera app with the Pixel camera app APK and see if it helps.
While I noticed the lack of NFC, I had tried many times to pay with my phone with Google/Android Pay. I would use it in stores and hear "that's so cool! Is that an iPhone"... Many times it required opening the app, tapping the phone, putting in my password, tapping the phone again, etc. More often than not, it just didn't work even at places that accepted the service. While that did get better over the years, it was still just so much of a hassle that I don't mind not having that feature.
Overall, the Moto G7 has been a great leap in quality, speed, and features from the Galaxy S7. I think the (comparatively) minor investment on the Moto G7 will hold up over the next two years, and has already made a great impression on me.
