Every night before bedtime Dad read tales to his daughter. Sometimes he had to leave for business to the other cities, and the girl could not fall asleep without the tales to which she was accustomed. Then Dad found a solution. He began to call his daughter on Skype to wish her goodnight and read a story. Her favorite fairy tales are collected in this book. This book presents Russian Folk Tales and fairy tales by famous European authors: Hans Christian Andersen, brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault. (No illustrations) http: //www.mygrandmastales.com

Nice short stories before bedtime. Thank your for doing it. It helps my grandchildren to learn Russian and same time brought great memories from
my own childhood...

For my purposes this is helpful. The first three stories are not from Grimm or Andersen. Two relate to Baba Yaga, and one to Jack Frost. It is intresting to see what overlaps and what does not overlap with the European traditions. It is interesting to see how people constructed oral stories for children before the age of picture books and publication. I think the "magic" that seems so dislocating might have been a necessary "cloak of invisibility." People had to address children without getting anywhere near the specifics. So incongruity blossoms, not very helpfully. The translation -- I've seen comments that the English is not poetic enough, is too literal. I would say the opposite, that I'm trying to refresh my terribly elementary Russian with this, and whoever put it into English took huge liberties. I'd really like to see the nuances that distinguish the Russian way of telling, for example, about Red Riding Hood. It makes me a little more "woke" to see her called (I think) Red Cloak, leaving off "riding," which come to think of it is used mostly for the music of it. The girl walked, not rode.

I'm giving it a three-star review due to English translation lacking fairy tale style. It's more like a direct translation word for word. I'm very pleased with the choice of the fairy tales though.

Recipient love it.

I was very excited about this book, and my wife is usually not very picky about Russian books for kids, but she hates this one in particular (we bought over 60 kids books this year, and she likes all other ones!). The book claims to be for children, but has no pictures! Not one, except on the cover. English translation is very poor. As a native English speaker, I was having difficulty understanding some portions throughout the book. What baffles us is that the Russian version of the tales is also written very poorly. My wife’s first language is Russian, and she gave up reading this book to our daughter half-way through.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disppointing

I have been trying to learn Russian for about three years and I bought this slim volume in the hope that it would be useful supplementary resource. The book shows signs of being thrown together in a very short time- a random look through it has revealed numerous instances where the Russian and English texts are considerably different. This is potentially very confusing for beginners. The lack of stress marks, noted by another reviewer, is also unhelpful.
