My late father loved this when it came out & I was a tween. We used to go on road trips to the state fair, so this brought back those memories. At the waterfall scene, I had to pause the movie, because I missed him so much, and seeing it happen to Max hit that nerve hard.
After I blew my nose and wiped the tears away, I watched the rest and enjoyed the big number.
So if you're grown up, it hits differently, but when you're a kid, it's still one of the best animated Disney movies.
The movie is full screen, but you don't miss anything from wide-screen aspect ratio.
It also comes with some fun bonuses, including an episode of the Disney Afternoon prequel series, the Goof Troop.
This is a great addition for your movie collection, and is delightfully.. well.. goofy.
They took one of the most loved Disney characters and gave him a great solo project with lots of hilarious moments, from the Possum park to the big concert. The road trip Max never wanted becomes an adventure for a father & son to grow together in ways they never knew they could, and they reconnect as family and besties. Goofy discovers Max is still a good kid, and Max discovers that being a chip off the old block isn't as bad as he feared.
Its about a father & son.
& Dad tries to be both a mother & a father to his son near the beginning, you'll see him vacuuming & wearing an apron over his head pretending to be like a housewife.
They have nothing in common it seems like. & the father only wants to increase the bond between the 2, as if he was one of his sons friends from school.
All kids boys & girls want their parents to understand them, & believe me that doesn't come easy. Junior prefers to be around his friends more then his father.
& just enjoys being cool.
So one day after Junior misbehaves in school by pretending to be a rock n roll star, & getting in trouble with the school principal, Dad decides its time to show his son just how much he loves him. Even if he is missing the point that his son is trying to get across to him.
So the Journey begins. & Junior goes anyways even though he is against going.
The funniest part was them arguing over the radio. The part about their encounter with big foot I didn't enjoy all that much, & him riding on the roof of their car.
I would have loved to of gotten to see more of Pete their neighbor.
You see a lot of fancy stuff with his RV trailer, stuff you'll only see in a fantasy world.
Another funny part was when Dad wasn't watching the road very carefully, & they go off of a cliff & land in the river.
& use their car the way they would use a raft & continue their Journey to Hollywood to see Juniors admired singer,
& Junior gets his wish after all. & the girl he was attracted to finally truly falls for him.
The movie is worth watching & very very goofy!
& on the TV show that use to come on the Disney channel, just ordinary everyday cartoons,
I have seen this one cartoon where goofy gets kissed by every visitor, this is the one where he is raising a son with short red hair named Junior. & has a wife, trying to raise a family, he also gets fat.
I know goofy no question about it. & seen most of the cartoons he's in.
And, if none of that makes you wanna buy it, trust me, you will enjoy the POWERLINE songs!!!!
The best part of the film is just Goofy and his son on the open road. But it surprisingly has a lot of heart to it by having Goofy trying to reconnect with his teenage son (Max), knowing that he only has a few more years left before going off to college and beginning his own life. That's not something that a kid would connect to, that's something for the adults and it works amazingly well. It strikes a surprisingly good balance between the funny moments and the more emotional, serious moments. It's the kind of writing that Hollywood, let alone Disney, is capable of doing anymore.
Seriously, how many other films being made today can do a film about a father trying to reconnect with his son without making the dad some deadbeat or "abandoning" type? Or make the teenager seem in the right, despite obviously being in the wrong without it being addressed?
When it comes to the characters, Goofy is... well, he's the Goofy one would remember and know. Max is a teenager who has understandable problems that teens can relate to and is his own character, able to grow and learn throughout the film. Other characters like Pete, P.J., and Roxanne are great to see. Along with other cameos that are best left for you to witness on screen.
While the 3rd act is a bit much, even raising a moral question, the rest of the film and its ending are great to watch. A Goofy Movie might not be the best but it's a film worth watching, especially if you are a parent.
I give the film a rating of 6/10.
