I bought this new yahtzee game to replace my other one that I've had for over 10 years because it developed a gltch. The new one works fine, but as you can see in the picture it has a yellowish screen which makes it hard to see the numbers. I thought it might be a plastic coating but it's not. Also the battery was dead when it arrived. Works well otherwise.
It does not work properly in ANY facet of the game. The buttons must be pushed down with a metal pen tip (closed), and even then they may not work. The numbers are TINY black numbers on a DARK amber background. The plastic cover is extremely reflective, so you won't have much luck seeing the game board (it is 2" x 2"). The button you push to "hold" a number while you roll the rest again, works randomly, so don't count on accuracy in creating a special grouping. There is a button for finding out how many points you still need in order to make the bonus on the top level (numbers 1-6). Again, you have to use a very sturdy ink pen end to push it down and it often doesn't show until you slide it around while pushing down very hard. Then it includes any useful numbers that are not yet included in the 1-6 slots. What? Yep! So if you think the three numbers you have rolled, but not yet "entered" into the top slots will help you reach your goal, they have already been included in the "sub-total" above. Surprise!! RIDICULOUS!! Save yourself some grief...pass on this one!
This was purchased to replace a tired, older hand-held Yahtzee game. And apparently this one was designed to make it LESS user-friendly. I'm looking at the older and the new one side-by-side, and it's clear that in this newer version all of the printing/labels on the buttons and controls are smaller and harder to read. For no apparent reason.
Additionally, there is no way to turn this one off. There is an On button, but once it's turned on, that button is used to move the game forward. So you can't toggle it off. I'm assuming that when you're done playing with it, you're expected to just set it aside and after draining the battery for awhile it will turn itself off. At least that's my assumption. Nowhere on the device or in the instructions does the word "off" appear, so I guess they never gave that any consideration. Oops.
Now, for the battery -- the older hand-held version uses one AAA battery, a common size that is widely available and that most people have around the house. This new version uses a lithium coin battery. You need a phillips screwdriver to get at it when it needs to be changed. The older version has a section of the back panel that just snaps out. And in order to find out what specific battery is needed, you either need to get out that screwdriver and open up the back, or get out a magnifying glass, because unlike the rest of the instructions this information is written in mouse-print.
This is like a weird exercise in how not to design a product. Very disappointing.
Received this game on date that was posted, seller did follow-up after order to advise it was shipped through US postal service. I was surprised it didn’t take long to receive. Good Service
