From the manufacturer
Experience the taste of bold, flavorful coffee with the Hamilton Beach Stainless Steel 12 Cup Percolator.
Before single serve and automatic drip coffee makers, there was the percolator. Remember the perking sounds of freshly brewing coffee? Better yet, how about the bold, hot coffee it produced? Coffee brewed in the Hamilton Beach Stainless Steel 12 Cup Percolator is still just as satisfying, but takes a lot less time to brew than the percolators of old.
This attractive stainless steel percolator stays hot with a gentle keep warm heater. It also has a detachable cord for tabletop serving, cool touch handle and no drip spout for easy pouring.
It is designed with a convenient coffee/water level viewing window so you know exactly how much is left. The twist off lid locks in place and is made of glass so you can see your coffee brewing. A ready-to-serve light takes the guesswork out of when it’s done. The light indicates brewing is complete and keep hot mode has started.

And this IS real stainless steel, not plastic.
It's nice looking. It makes EXCELLENT coffee once you get your coffee/water ratio correct. I do 8 cups of water to 3 scoops of coffee... with a coffee scoop, not a spoon.
I find the coffee basket peculiarly narrow which makes scooping the coffee in a little difficult, but it's doable. I also bought the Melitta percolator coffee filters. They're a disc filter that sit in the bottom of the coffee basket. They're easy to use and do a nice job of filtering the coffee. My coffee isn't bitter at all and I use cheap Folgers Black Silk. It's good. REALLY GOOD.
This percolator is easy for me to clean, but a man with big hands may not be able to hand wash it.
I use a straw brush, like these: https://smile.amazon.com/Straw-Brush-Cleaner-10-ihch-5-inch/dp/B07DNNT27X/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=straw+brushes&qid=1608411637&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyQk8yRzI0SEFTNjJXJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMDYxNzAyWDVLMko2T0tDSk5OJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAxNjgwMDUyWlFXOTBKTDhXSDdHJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfcGhvbmVfc2VhcmNoX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
to clean the stem and I use a small bottle brush to clean the nozzle.
If cleaning a coffee pot isn't your thing, you may not want to switch from a drip coffee maker because every part of a percolator gets cleaned everyday. It's labor intensive.
I like the window for the water measurement because the inside markings are difficult to see without a flashlight. And it perks pretty fast. I put my coffee and water in at night and just plug it in when I get up. Not long after the insistent kitty is fed, the coffee is finished perking... and it's GOOD. IMO, it's 100 times better than drip coffee. This is the first percolator I've had (except for my emergency stove top percolator) since drip coffee makers hit the scene. There's no comparison in coffee. Perked is way better.
The cord, from tip of the plug tines to the end that plugs into the pot is 18 1/4". It needs to be near an outlet. The percolator also stays on until you unplug it. It continues to keep the coffee at the perfect temperature and tasting just as good and smooth as the first cup.
I just hope this pot lasts because it was hard to find a brushed stainless steel percolator!
👍👍 from me.
The reason I am trying the Hamilton Beach is because the other percolators mentioned above just don't do it for me, so I decided to try something else. Generally, I would continue to use a Farberware percolator, but 6 months isn't a long enough life expectancy for the money. So far the Hamilton Beach is doing what I had hoped, and if something changes I will come back and change my review. Promise.
Positives: makes a great cup of coffee and actually fewer grounds are needed than with the other percolators. It has a deeper, but narrower basket. Overall it's easy to use and to clean. Brewing is indicated by a blue light, and when the coffee is finished, the light turns green. Believe, me you can't miss the light! It has a water level indicator that you can see beneath the handle (not that easy to read water levels, but it's there). Finished coffee is hot, but not overly hot.
I have no negatives at this point, but will point a few things out. The body of the pot is aluminum. The stem and basket (and lid) are stainless steel. The cord is short, in my opinion, but it does not pose a problem for me. You can always order a longer cord here on Amazon for a few bucks more, and I suggest buying one if you need the extra length. The lid works a little differently than most. It has a lock, and it is engaged by twisting the lid maybe 1/16 turn. For some, it may be a little difficult to remove the lid, but overall it fits tightly.
As I said, I haven't used the percolator very long and if anything changes, I'll update this review. I'll close by saying that my wife told me that she really liked the pot - something she has never mentioned with any of the other percolators we've owned.
Pros:
- FAST! Packaging stated <1 minute per cup, which we have found to be accurate
- Makes GREAT coffee!
- NO aluminum parts touching the coffee to ruin the taste! All parts of this percolator that come in contact with the coffee are stainless steel.
- Glass knob, not plastic
- Auto shut-off kicks in when the coffee (or hot water, if you're using it as an electric kettle) is ready, and goes into "keep warm" mode
- Has a water-level viewing window in the handle
- Ready light
- No-drip spout really doesn't drip
- No measuring grounds! Filter basket is pre-marked with fill lines for appropriate amount of grounds, from 4-12 cups.
- Filter basket rests on a spring wrapped around the stem, which allows it to pop up slightly when lid removed for easy basket retrieval! LOVE this feature
Cons:
- Did not come with power cord, but this may be because I purchased an open-box item that was used as an in-store display. Since it does use a standard 2-prong percolator cord, this was only a minor inconvenience.
- Holes on filter basket are large enough to allow some grounds to wash through if not using a coarse blend ground specifically for percolators, or grinding your own beans. However, this is easily mitigated by use of a paper filter disk or wrap filter.
Overall, I'm very pleased with this percolator! It's thoughtfully designed, makes great coffee with no metallic taste, and cleans up easily.
