Yorkshire Television (now ITV), produced the show using a one camera view system throughout the series. The show was not produced in high-definition and most of the episodes have a grainy edge to them. Which is unpopular with many people living outside the U.K. The main cast is comprised of some very notable performers such as; Bruce Alexander (Supt. Mullett), John Lyons (Sgt. George Toolan), and Arthur White (Sgt. Trigg) who is also Sir David Jason's real life brother. The show is set in the fictional village of Denton. However, its clear to most in the U.K. that West Yorkshire, Berkshire, and Oxfordshire are in fact the locations.
While many of the reviews written reflect on the "style" of how our television shows have the look of non-glamorous, non-glitz, its not by design. But rather by budget. Before the satellite dish came to the U.K. our television line up consisted of only four channels; BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, and if lucky Yorkshire. We do not have "commercials or sponsors" hence the Crown (government), collects a tax on TV's (a license) which every home must have, and the tax is not used to pay for big budget shows.
A Touch of Frost is a wonderful show. Other crime drama's to consider besides Midsomer Murders, and Inspector Morse are; Inspector Lewis, Prime Suspect (Helen Mirren), Silent Witness (Amanda Burton), The Bill, The Sweeney (For those who enjoyed actor John Thaw), and Cracker (Robbie Coltrane).
I initialy tested individually sold series 9&10, and 13. I think they said CC, but subtitles were actually on the discs themselves, meaning they will play on old and new players. This collection was the same.
Normally, Closed Captions (CC), only work through the old cables w red, white, and yellow ends. They come through the TV or cable box, and are NOT on the disc. Subtitles, sometimes called SDH - Subtitles for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing - are on the disc, and work irreguardless of cable type or player.
The picture is sometimes grainy on a 55" screen, but this tv series was made at a time no one had a TV bigger than 32", and HDMI wasn't invented. I noticed the graininess at first, but eventually forgot as the stories captivated me. If you want fast-paced action, this isn't for you. But if you prefer real characters, interesting stories, and subtitles, Inspector Frost is worth the $.
However, I believe this is the finest police drama series ever produced. David Jason (stage name, real name David White) is beyond brilliant. No other words comes close. Masterful screen play. Jason's drama side effortlessly slides from witty sarcastic comic to high drama in seconds. He shows true pathos for the victims and cunning wit to bypass police procedures to 'get his man'. The 'end justifies the means' taken to satirical heights. I truly believe that no other actor - not Peter Falk, Walter Matthau, or anyone can hold a candle to Mr. Jason and the amazing screen play writing. Look: its not comedy and not total drama. It needs an open attitude of mind to enjoy this serious series and understand the conventional stogy police procedures again wonderfully portrayed by Bruce Alexander as Super' Mullett plays a pivotal balancing role essential to the success of the series.
