I purchased this microwave because, like many who have reviewed it here, we have it located below a cabinet with cabinets on either side, and the previous Spacesaver II finally quit working after nearly 10 years. Because this new GE device is slightly larger than the previous one, I agonized over fixing the old one or purchasing this new one--the price was about the same.
I decided to purchase this new one. It is about the same quality as the earlier 1.0 cubic feet microwave (I paid about $100 for that, so we know that mostly I was concerned about size and not trying to impress the neighbors, even though the appliances in our kitchen are top end KitchenAid, with a refrigerator that is finished like the cabinets, a built in double oven and a range top on granite). All appliances, including this new microwave, are ALL BLACK.
While this unit is slightly larger in all dimensions, it was easily accommodated in the space used by the previous device. The bulges in the aluminum shield on the back required me to carve out more sheet rock behind the unit, and while it is ever so bigger vertically, it was not a problem on the sides where it abutted the cabinets. I used the same mounting kit that held the previous unit in place, noting that I'd had to drill it out somewhat to make both of them (this unit as well as the previous one) install properly. For this new unit I had to cut about an inch off the front end of one of the metal strips to make it fit. I could just as easily used machine screws and oversized washers in place of the mounting kit.
While installation is possible by a single individual, this would have gone a bit more quickly with an extra set of hands. Put the box that GE ships the unit in underneath the device while you install it. It's much easier to lift into place, and if you accidentally lose control of it or drop it, you likely won't damage it.
My closing comment is to be sure you check out the ratings of the shipper. This unit arrived in a very large cardboard box that was difficult to handle by a single individual. It was banged up on two corners, very dirty and scuffed. When I picked it up, the microwave inside rapidly began to move and I nearly lost control of the entire package and actually hurt my back in my endeavor to keep from dropping it. When I opened the very large cardboard box (well over double the volume of the packaged microwave), there was a single piece of brown wrapping paper that was thrown in for good measure by some uncaring employee to keep the much smaller box inside from moving. No foam, cardboard or wadded up newspaper. If you peruse these reviews you'll find that mine is not an isolated instance of this. As the unit seemed to work fine during testing, I elected to install it but only time will tell. These are relatively sensitive units and the magnetrons especially are not shock resistant. My unit was shipped by Dynamic deals. They get good reviews. Hopefully this was a one time screw up by them and they'll not repeat the mistake. Believe me, if this stops working anytime soon I will return it and purchase it from another vendor.

One thing to be aware of: the electric cord protrudes slightly from the back of the microwave, so that your cabinet needs to be a bit deeper than the stated dimensions of the microwave in order to accommodate it. I measured our cabinet carefully and concluded it would just fit. But it turns out that the cord makes the back of the microwave stand slightly away from the back of the cabinet. It fits, but the door to the cabinet doesn't quite close completely. It's fine--you can barely see that the cabinet door is very slightly ajar--but something you may want to consider when you measure: add maybe a half inch to the stated depth of the microwave.
