It is easy to learn to use and you can set three different speeds, and also a quick clean speed. The speeds vary from 300 RPM to 3600 RPM. I replaced a Hayward 1 1/2 HP motor. Going by the filter pressure, the new Pentair speed of 3000 RPM seemed to be equal to the single speed Hayward Pump speed. When first started, the Pentair ran at 3600 RPM and showed a higher filter pressure, and pushed "junk" from my filter into the pool. I now run the Pentair at a maximum speed of 3000 RPM.
The pump gives great flexibility and is a good bit quieter than the Hayward Super Pump, especially on the lower speeds. It also runs very cool ... my old Hayward was always very hot to the touch. I find I use speeds 3000, 2000 and 1400. My pool heat pump runs fine on the first two, but 1400 is too slow to run the heat pump. I run 3000 RPM when using my Polaris 360. The energy savings on the slower speeds is substantial, and you can read the watts used on the digital read out. It is good to have at least 6" above the pump so that you can flip the control panel cover up and down.
I guess you could remove this cover if you did not have enough room above the pump (to your pipes). With the pump basket in front the read out numbers are upside down, but that is no problem at all to read and use. I have the "quick clean" cycle set at 3000 RPM and duration of one hour.
Whatever speed I'm running, if I want to add chemicals or run the Polaris, I just hit the "quick clean" button and I'm good to go.
This pump gives great flexibility, energy saving, quiet operation and I can't think of any negatives at all. Terrific pump, highly recommended!
Using a NIOSH Sound level meter to measure the DB's, when the pump runs at 1400 RPM, its 52 DB right at the pump itself. When the pump is running at 3400 RPM's, its at 70 DB's right at the pump and about 52 DB's about 10' away from the pump.
So ignore the other reviews where people complain that the pump isn't as quiet as advertised because it truly is.
My only complaint is on the inlet filter cover - you have to twist it on/off and it can be very difficult to move. I have pretty strong hands and it takes some elbow grease to move it. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, theoretically, because you need as tight of an air seal as possible for the pump to run properly.
My only regret is not sizing up to a 2 HP option, but that would have required a change to the sand filter as the 2 HP likely would have exceeded the operating pressure limits.
I use a salt generator to chlorinate the pool. The previous installation used a master timer to control and power both the salt generator and the pump simultaneously. As this system comes with an integral timer, I left the salt generator on the master timer and used the factory default programming on the pump. All I can say is "WOW". Most of the time you can't tell if this is running because it's so quiet, and it functions flawlessly.
The single draw back to this purchase is that the manufacturer does not honor the warranty if you install the pump yourself. As a result, I purchased the warranty marketed by Amazon thru Asurion. I seldom buy additional warranties, but my previous pump didn't last more than about 3 years and I'd paid more for it than this. Further, I'd never been able to get it to prime at low speeds and trying to figure out a work around when it started after a power failure proved too difficult so I never ran it at low speed (that pump was a two speed pump, both speeds pre-set by the manufacturer, Eco Pump). This pump with it's manufacturers default programming always starts at high speed for 5 minutes to insure it primes. The pump will eventually pay for itself with the money saved by running a such low speed for most of the day.
