I've taken 10s of thousands of images with this lens over the past few years. Most have been action shots. There is some vignetting at max zoom, but the vividness and fast-focus capability of the lens is exceptional at this price point. The lens has been durable too. I've spend countless hours standing in saltwater taking photos. It's been tossed in a pocket and backpack, and it keeps working. One of the best camera purchases I've ever made, and all of my other lenses are primes.
I also at this point,,,, am working on dialing i this lens.
I am enjoying the color rendition,,, even before I put my shots into my silkyprints program.
i am also loving the dual stabilization.... since i pretty much do handheld.
awesome build quality for this lens.
i will know more by this summers end
For me this P-L lens wins over the Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8, overall. Not based strictly on image quality however. I do think that Panasonic charges an obscene price for this lens. The Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 is a better lens to use, is faster, and is consistently slightly more sharp -- and its cheaper!! However the P-L lens is smaller, lighter and has 1/3 more reach. THAT is what won me over, not the image quality. The image quality is very good, but not quite as good as the much cheaper Olympus 50-150mm f/2.8.
I have had the PL 100-400mm for several years - and my experience is about the same. That lens, like this 50-200mm, is inconsistent. The Olympus competition is CONSISTENTLY sharp. You don't have to take multiple shots and cross your fingers. With the P-L, you do.
But because of the overall solid performance, lower size and weight, and more reach - I did go with the P-L 50-200mm lens. I do not want to carry the Olympus in my backpack all week unless it is notably better in image quietly. It is not. It is however slightly more sharp and consistently so.
FYI - All of my comparisons were wide open on both lenses. I usually shoot wide open and besides, lenses just get better when stopped down. We all get that.
Comparison of P-L vs Olympus
- Olympus has a cool hood. Not a big deal for me personally. It also has that cool function button which is nice. Oh - and it has a tripod collar. The P-L could use one when its zoomed out, but does not come with one.
- Olympus is slightly sharper in general and is a uniform f/2.8. If you only care about IQ and not size/weight, get the Olympus. It's amazing. And its much cheaper.
- Olympus has slightly better contrast. I general I did not see this as a big deal.
- Olympus is CONSISTENT shot to shot. The P-L output varies some, just like my P-L 100-400mm.
- Olympus is cheaper. Panasonic is crazy to charge what they charge. But I bought it so I'm a sucker I guess.
- Panasonic is smaller and lighter. I carry lenses for many miles and many days. I ski with these lenses. So to me, size and weight matter.
- Panasonic has 200mm versus 150mm. Thats significant. I expect to be on the long end often, and I won't have to carry a T/C.
- Finally note that Panasonic is actually sharp at 200mm. Nice.
Good luck! There is no clear winner. It depends what you value.
Why I thought I wouldn't like it:
* No tripod collar on the lens so you have to mount the camera and leave the lens hanging out forward
* zoom causes the end to trombone (extend) out
* variable aperture
* $$$$$$
It turns out I was wrong. You don't need the tripod collar because the lens is actually not too big, so it is plenty stable mounted with the camera on a tripod. But really if you put this on a Panasonic body with sensor stabilization the Dual IS of the sensor and lens together mean you can shoot handheld in almost all situations down to 1/60th or even 1/10th of a second, which I found just jaw dropping. The tromboning means that the lens stores smaller in the camera bag, and it is weather sealed, which takes away some of the worry of dust getting in that way.
As for the variable aperture I still have mixed feelings. One thing that does make this tolerable is that even wide open it is tack sharp at all zoom ranges. A lot of lenses you end up stopping down a stop or two to get great sharpness, with this lens you get great sharpness at wide open from the get go. At 50mm f2.8 it makes a good portrait lens, which surprised me for a monster zoom like this. If you are going to be exclusively shooting portraits the 42.5 f1.2 Nocticron is going to be even better, but the fact that this can shoot nice portraits makes it quite versatile. At the long end 200mm f4.0 is still quite usable, especially since the dual IS makes low shutter speeds stable, but I would have rather had a larger lens that was f2.8 throughout.
Comparing this to the Olympus 45-150mm PRO I would say which you should buy depends on if you shoot Olympus or Panasonic bodies. The Panasonic lens stabilization doesn't coordinate with the Olympus sensor stabilization, so Olympus bodies probably will want to buy the Olympus lens for their bodies. The Olympus lens doesn't have lens stabilization, is larger, and only goes out to 150mm instead of 200mm. However, the Olympus lens is a bit cheaper, is constant f2.8 throughout the range, has a tripod mount on the lens, and has a retractable lens hood. I think on the Panasonic bodies with sensor stabilization the dual IS is so good with this lens you really should choose it over the Olympus. Plus with the Panasonic you get that extra bit of zoom and a smaller size in your camera bag.
A note on teleconverters. If you are going to be posting photos on Instagram, Facebook, etc then it is going to be easier just to crop the photo an equivalent amount in post. A 20 megapixel image cropped 2x down to 10 megapixel will still be quite usable for a lot of purposes. If you are going to use the teleconverter a lot it may make sense to buy the Panasonic 100-400mm instead. After all with a 2x teleconverter this lens is essentially a 100-400mm f5.6-f8.0 and the Panasonic 100-400mm f4.0-6.3 lens you can buy will be sharper and wider than this lens with the 2x teleconverter. With the 1.4x teleconverter this lens becomes a 70-280mm f4-f5.6. The teleconverter does cause a loss in sharpness, but is still pretty usable. So teleconverters occupy this weird middle ground where you need higher resolution than digitally cropping in post but don't have the longer lens itself. From where I sit the teleconverters cost too much for that middle ground, they seem like a compromise you shouldn't have to make.
It is also worth comparing this to the Panasonic 200mm or Olympus 300mm prime lenses. At wider apertures (7-45mm range on micro 4/3) I am a big fan of shooting with primes for their wider apertures and sharper optics, you can always zoom with your feet. However, with longer lenses you are usually using one because you can't zoom with your feet, the subject is just far away. Birds and sports being the big two. For these primes tend to not be great because you will either be too zoomed in or not zoomed in enough. You need something that will move through zoom while your feet stay still. A 45-150mm or 50-200mm is a good midrange zoom that is good for a lot of sports and some birds, though if you are in the nosebleed seats or photographing skittish birds it may not be enough zoom for you. Others may want to look at the 100-400mm Panasonic, which I have also shot with and can confirm and is a great lens. However, the Panasonic 100-400mm is so long that you can't use it as an all around lens, the subject has to be very far away even at 100mm. Ideally you'd own both, but neither is cheap so that may not be realistic.
As to the price, well you get what you pay for. You can buy a cheap 45-150mm for literally a tenth of the cost of this lens and it will take OK photos. Not as sharp, not as wide, not as good of stabilization, not as much contrast. I have one and it's good enough for some Instagram photos that will be viewed on a phone, but anytime I try to blow up one of those photos or pixel peep I am disappointed.
