Things they don’t tell you
3 Stars
Things they don’t tell you
I had a vintage toaster that toasted white bread in a golden hue without the wire marks most have, and the bread itself didn’t dry out because it had a moisture sensor. The logic part of me says any toaster is just some elements that heat up and they burn the bread to the users desired level of brownness. Physics says that’s all they can possibly do no matter how much you pay for them. And that’s mostly true, I think my Kenwood’s cabinet design helped trap the bread’s moisture and kept it from escaping as much as some other designs. Anyway it was lost during moving. Since then in only five years I’ve bought six more that I didn’t like and I hope this one just does the simple job of toasting bread the way I like it.DIFFERENT OR NOTIf the laws of physics are true and no matter what the ad writers claim no toaster can do more than shine a couple of heating elements on either side of the bread for a given time, so then why pay two hundred bucks for one when you can get a cheap one down at the discount store for under twenty bucks? The short answer there isn’t a valid reason but here are a few things that we consumers look for1. Does it look good? Let’s just say the Breville looks different, the shape and the colors fit most schemes from retro to modern to traditional. I bought it because I like the dark blue look.2. Is it heavy? Yes this is a valid concern, I am so over toasters that literally tip over when I push the bread lever down. This one is among the heaviest of the ones I looked for, exceeded only by the Wolf Gourmet in my tests and that one is just a Hamilton Beach made product with an impressive brand logo on it.3. Are the controls convenient? I have yet to find any two-slice toaster that has truly convenient controls. As a person who spent a lot of time in my life in UI design I sure wish one of those companies would ask my opinion. This one makes you decide if you want the long side or the short side facing out, because the important controls are located in both places. They sort of hint they want it placed sideways because weirdly the power cord exits at the end where the lever is but if your counter space is limited maybe that doesn’t work for you. Just for comparison, my old unit that I loved so much had its controls rounded around the front corner so it worked with either side out.4. Gadgets or simple? On a toaster there isn’t one gadget that will make it toast better, only gimmicks that give you more control or convenience. The Breville takes gadgetry and makes it look simple, it’s something their company excels at. The side mounted circular control is actually two controls combined with several LED status lights. It has no digital readouts though and if any of the end buttons are activated only a subtle white ring appears around the button. The fact that the circular control is illuminated is a big help when you’re preparing an early morning breakfast in a dimly lit kitchen.5. Lever or motorized? I’ve seen several places that claim this toaster is motorized, it is not. For a toaster that’s priced in the stratosphere the lever is straight out of the bargain basement models. A motor doesn’t toast bread any better and it is certain to break before a mechanical lever will. To their credit this lever is easier than average to press down and the entire thing doesn’t rock to one side or tip over when you do, however on the other hand it feels just like a fifteen buck toaster, it’s actually pretty disappointing. When it pops up the top of the bread is even with the top of the unit so it’s impossible to grab your toast with your fingers, you are required to use what they call the Lift and Lock lever, and that lever is not what they say it is, it does NOT lock in the “up” position, you have to hold it up with your other hand.FEATURES AND FOIBELSI’ve outlined most of the features, but what about what they could have (and should have) done better for something priced so high? The power cord is a head scratcher, they seem to be trying so hard to have you orient this toaster sideways yet the cord exits from the lever end. That’s not a game changer, you can route the cord underneath to exist on any side you choose. Look at my photo for a hint how to route the cord best if you want it to exit from the rear. Another related thing is that most Breville products have a huge power plug with a finger hole molded in. I like it, especially for things that I unplug and store after use, but it sticks way out from the wall. Here’s another hint: get a heavy-duty grounded right-angle adapter so your plug will hang straight down along the wall. The heating coils are 1000 watts, something no one including them seems to make a big point of. Most toasters range from 800-900 watts so theoretically this one should toast faster (not better). They are designed similar to commercial toasters and have a significantly more coils and a larger usable surface area, all of which helps bread toast evenly corner to corner and maybe helps hold in the moisture better.FALLACIESSome have said that the lighted dial never goes off. Not true, be patient, it will go off by itself after a few minutes of being idle. And some have said there is an end-of-cycle warning beep. Again not true, the only way you know your toast is done is when you hear the mechanical device pop up. As far as unique features, they try to make the lift to look thing a feature, hint it is not, almost every brand toaster has one. They also blow their horn on the A Little Bit More button, and they should, it is actually a major item on my list of must have features on a kitchen appliance and it is exclusive to Breville. Except it’s not in this case it is only a reheat feature, something you can do yourself on any toaster. It is not a smart feature, just a timer but you have to know how much more toasting you need (you can’t untoast bread unfortunately). And the only way of knowing for sure is to keep lifting the lever until it’s where you want it to be, making the much appreciated Little Bit More button on this particular appliance little more than just a marketing gadget. To their credit, unlike my Breville toaster oven, it can be used after the cycle is completed. On my toaster oven if you press the button after the timer goes off nothing happens.YES NO MAYBESometimes deciding how I feel about a product can be a tough call, especially if I spent a lot of money on something mundane that really isn’t a quantum leap above something I could have bought for twenty bucks. But that was my choice and I can’t blame anyone for it. I have to ask myself did the manufacturer live up to their marketing claims, did the toaster look good, were the buttons actually useful and the bottom line is does it toast bread the way I like it? If it does I’ll forget what I paid for it in a few months and I will either be satisfied with it for a long time or I will wish I hadn’t bought it. The story ends with the fact that I sent it back. Why, because while the slots are wide they are only big enough to fit ordinary sandwich bread, I can’t even fit a piece of rye bread into it or any artesian varieties, and that made the whole thing not usable for the majority of breads I want to toast. Because I couldn’t keep it I can only rate it as average.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another crappy modern toaster
Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2024
The pictures are of the same toasted bread, just flipped them over for the second picture. This is the second toaster I have tried. It uses the exact same “modern” filaments as most of the other toasters now on the market. These new filaments are terrible. They toast completely unevenly as you can see in the pictures. There is tremendous variation in how hot the filaments get. Some turn bright red, some light red, and many of them don’t even get hot enough to turn red. I tried a KitchenAid before this one and the insides are identical and it worked just as poorly. Quality control is absent with these toasters.
