Upon launch, there is a wizard that opens so you can get your grounding on using the software - and it has a do not launch again option once you get familiar with the program.
7.0 looks like it released on 2/5/19 and today 7/24/20, the program has no updates. I found that a little odd, but take it for what you will. there is a 40 day trial available.
Also, if you want to see how the program function without a trial, there are training videos on the ashampoo site.
I have only used the software a little bit - I'm still trying to get more proficient with it.
My initial thoughts
It seems to be functioning fairly fast on my surface pro.
It has quite a bit of support around getting a new user familiar with its layout.
I like the drag & drop functionality so far. Seems well laid out.
I don't know how it compares to a Auto-CAD - I'm not a user of it, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper… And I don’t know if Auto-CAD would work on my surface.
After I complete my intended project, I'll update the review.
It just seems to be made for Europeans and is very metric system oriented. You can change that for American users, but still often it will revert back to metric system measurements! That's very annoying and makes it quite hard to work with.
This is nothing like Vision Res or Autocad. My husband has worked in housing design for decades and has found this software very difficult to adjust to. The tutorials go fast, and don't have sound. The help files are lacking and he's not been able to find help on many topics that he's looked up.
After a week he was able to get a template to start with - he about always works off templates. However, the templates always revert back to metric system measurements.
It's a shame this isn't better. We have been using older software that will only run on XP and we'd really like something modern and affordable for Windows 10.
On the positive side, this does allow you to put in electrical and plumbing details. We normally only work with the lumber components of a home in a very detailed manner- initial house designs with lumber estimates for builders to take to the bank. This isn't really working for what we need.
For our needs, it's a 2. However, it might be a 3 or higher for someone who is working with the metric system of measurements, for instance, designers and builders in Canada or Europe.
sent a link for silent video's that may be good for someone with experience with this type of program. they said that is all they have. so I guess I wasted my money.
Pros:
- Obviously the price, if money was not an issue everyone would have gone for AutoCAD. This is almost half the price of CAD
- It can handle both planning/design and also visualizing at the same time. You wont need to export import files back and forth.
- Almost any new 3D object can be added easily. Roof modeling and construction is pretty good compared to others.
- Being able to export import PDF and Excel are big pluses imo. DWG and DXF can obviously easily be imported and exported too
Cons:
- US measures still not very complete. Units need some work
- You need to be good at what you do to be able to use this. Definitely not for a beginner. If you're not a designer or havent used CAD before, don't even bother. You need to be a pro or a semi pro to be able to use this comfortably
- Once in 3D rendering, it froze on me and had to close and re-open and use the temp file, not saying its not reliable but it should have never happenned
