UtechSmart USB C Docking Station
Before you purchase, please confirm the native USB-C port of your laptop supports DP Alt Mode:
1. Thunderbolt 3/4: 40Gbps bandwidth, supports quadruple Displays. (With two HOSTs)
2. USB-C 3.1 Gen 2: 10Gbps bandwidth, supports two or three monitors.
3. USB-C 3.1 Gen 1: 5Gbps bandwidth, supports one monitor only. Note: Our docking station is not compatible for this port.
4. System: Compatible for macOS X(except M1 chip and M2 chip), Windows 10, Windows 11, Android, Chrome OS Google, Linux with the latest updates.
For more compatibility information please see the 'User Guide. pdf' document under the 'Product guides and documents'.
Friendly Reminder:
1. Please connect the power adapter to the USB C PD(Power Delivery) charging port of the laptop docking station or connect the original laptop power adapter to the charging port on your laptop directly before using. Note: Power adapter is NOT included.
2. HOST1 system only drives HDMI1 display, other ports except HDMI1 are from HOST2 system(i.e.: USB ports, SD/TF ports, PD port and audio ports etc).
3. For some Windows laptops that are only equipped with one USB C port, please connect to HOST2 to get peripheral devices working via USB C cord. For HOST2, if your windows laptop is equipped with Intel Graphics Card, one of 4 monitors will be no display signal. Only three screen will be displayed including the laptop’s screen. For Mac OS, please connect the HOST1 and HOST2 ports via the dual USB C cable.
4. When enabling 4k resolution on the HDMI1 port, all of other display resolutions will be limited to 1920*1080@60Hz once you connect the VGA port. DP1.2 has bandwidth issues, which may cause the resolution of a certain monitor to be reduced to below 1920*1080.
5. Due to the process of EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) communication protocol, your displays may blackout and back on upon plugging into the docking station. This is normal behavior and the displays will recover within a few seconds, but the speed depends on the source device and monitor (1 minute at max).
6. The newest Macbook and iMac with M1 chip or M2 chip unfortunately doesn't support MST.
7. Please connect wireless devices such as wireless mouse and wireless keyboard to the USB 2.0 ports on the docking station.

This hub packs a lot of features into a small package, and it can do everything that it claims. As a result, this is a complex device composed of multiple chips from different vendors and it may not behave as you initially expect. Any device like this is going to have this characteristic. Many of the advertised features require that the computer and cables meet certain requirements to work. In my experience using these devices, the computer rarely tells you why a particular feature isn't working as the user intended. However, they do tend to fail gracefully, i.e. if a display can't output 4k60, it will fall back to 4k30 or 1080p60.
This is the third Type C hub/dock Ive bought from UTechSmart, and the fifth overall. I've been very happy with the other two hubs, and so far I'm happy with this one as well. I use them daily.
Design and Use Philosophy:
This device is small enough to travel with, but it is clearly intended to live on a desk. The included cables are one meter long. Speaking of cables, it comes with two: a regular Type C to C cable, and one with two type C connectors on each end. The connectors on the latter cable are apparently spaced to match Apple laptops so that you can use both host ports while only needing to plug in one cable. I don't own any Apple computers so I can't use it for anything. Personally, I would have preferred a second single cable, or a double cable with ends that can accommodate other laptops. Maybe two single cables with a clip that can hold them together for a Macbook? But seeing a cable with an industry standard interface effectively turned into a proprietary one is surprisingly amusing. If I owned an Apple laptop I would appreciate it more.
Construction:
I can't tell exactly what material the casing is made of, but it has a nice anodized or PVD coating. It feels very similar to the coating on the other models of UTechSmart hubs that I own. In my experience those have proven to be very scratch-resistant. The 'vents' are on the underside of the case, blocked by the bottom circuit board, with about 1mm of clearance. I don't expect any cooling from that. Despite this, the exterior barely got above ambient temperature during use. I'm not worried about overheating. The rubber feet do a good job of keeping it in place. If you use all the ports on the back and have too much cable tension, it might try to tilt forward.
Electronic Design:
USB Type C has many optional features and interconnections with other standards (USB 3.2, Thunderbolt 3, Power Delivery, DisplayPort, upcoming USB 4) to the point that trying to figure out compatibility and capability can be intimidating. Many parts of the spec are optional. The extra hardware added to this device can have its own issues or interactions with the above-mentioned standards.
A Type C connection has four high-speed serial links, or 'lanes' plus a legacy USB 2.0 connection. The lanes can be used for different functions. USB 3.1 Gen 1 requires two lanes. Faster modes (not supported by this hub) use all four. Some video output devices use all four lanes, leaving only USB 2.0 for everything else. There are other pins in the connector for power, etc.
This is actually two devices in one. Host 1 connects to HDMI 1 and nothing else. It uses all 4 lanes for video. If your computer only supports the DisplayPort HBR2 data rate, then this is the only port that can output 4k60 video.
Host 2 connects to everything else. Host 1 and Host 2 can connect to different computers simultaneously.
This is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 device, so 5 Gb/s bandwidth is shared between the USB ports, the Ethernet port (Realtek RTL8153), the sound card, and the SD card reader (USB 3.0). Some Type C hubs will use the dedicated USB 2.0 channel for the USB 2 ports instead of just hanging them off the internal USB 3.1 hub. I don't know if this device does that, and if it can it may require host device support to do it.
The device uses the remaining two lanes for video out via Multi-Stream Transport (MST). MST is a DisplayPort standard that allows multiple displays to be multiplexed into one DP data stream. So each display is driven by your GPU. There are no DisplayLink chips in this hub. Only having two lanes for video means that the available bandwidth is half what it would normally be for a given data rate. DisplayPort has different data rates. When two DP devices are connected, they attempt to connect at the fastest speed they can both support over the cable between them, and fall back to slower ones if needed. The fastest data rate supported by DisplayPort 1.2 is HBR2. HBR3 was added in DP 1.3, but not all DP 1.3 devices support HBR3. Not all devices that claim to support HBR3 actually do so. This was the case with one of the laptops I tested with this dock.
Testing:
Laptops (year, cpu, GPU, os)(OS up to date, latest drivers, etc.):
GPD Pocket 2 (2018, m3-8100y, UHD 615, Win 10 LTSC 1809)
Razer Blade Stealth 13 (2019, i7-1065G7, Iris Plus and GTX 1650, Win 10 Home 2004)
Razer Blade 15 (2019, i7-9750H, UHD 630 and RTX 2070, Win 10 Home 2004)
Displays (native res):
Dell E2416H (1080p)
Dell S2240L(1080p)
Dell U2713HM (1440p)
Samsung UN50NU6950 (4K60)
Display Testing (tl;dr: true quad display output if your laptop has two type C ports and supports HBR3):
All of the manufacturer claims about display output supported by the device assume the source computer(s) are using the HBR3 date rate to connect. There is a handy chart in the manual that lists what output combinations are supported on different ports.
If your device only supports HBR2, your options are more limited. The bandwidth requirements are fairly straightforward to calculate.
I don't have any monitors that support Display Stream Compression (DSC) so I couldn't test that. The documentation doesn't mention DSC, so I assume it isn't supported anyway.
Warning, math:
HBR2 is 4.32 Gb/s per lane after overhead is removed.
HBR3 is 6.48 Gb/s/lane.
Rate Lanes(Port) Bandwidth (Gb/s)
HBR2 2(Host 2) 8.64
HBR2 4(Host 1) 17.28
HBR3 2(Host 2) 12.96
HBR3 4(Host 1) 25.92
Here's what common displays require (Gb/s):
1080p60 3.2
1440p60 5.63
4k30 6.18
4k60 12.54
Example:
The DP alt-mode on Host 2 only has two lanes, since the dock reserves the other two high-speed lanes for USB 3.1. With HBR2 there is 8.64 Gb/s of throughput after overhead is removed. This is enough for one 4k30 (6.2 Gb/s), one 1440p60 (5.6 Gb/s) or two 1080p60 (2x3.2 Gb/s). If you exceed the amount of bandwidth available one of your displays just won't work, or it might drop to a lower resolution. You can use your computer's display preferences to choose which connected displays to use without having to unplug anything.
Using HBR3, one can see that there is just enough bandwidth for a single 4k60 output via Host 2 (12.96>12.54), or one 1440p60 and two 1080p60 (12.96>5.63+3.2+3.2). This is consistent with my testing.
I have found that HBR3 support isn't something that you should take for granted. Here's an example:
One of my test laptops, the Razer Stealth refused to connect at HBR3, even though both GPUs should support it. Even though that laptop has two GPUs and both a USB-C and a Thunderbolt 3 port (both work with the dock), the ports are only internally connected to the Intel GPU. Apparently it acts as a middleman between the displays and the GTX 1650. This also means that it can only output to three displays total, since that is a limitation of the Intel GPU. According to the Intel datasheet for this chip, it definitely supports HBR3. But I could only get it to connect at HBR2. I suspect this is a limitation caused by Razer somehow.
The other Razer laptop connects all video outputs to the RTX 2070 and has no issues connecting at HBR3. So the dock and its included cable can definitely handle the HBR3 data rate.
VGA:
VGA output was as good as can be expected when pushed to 1080p. It was crisp and readable, but not as sharp as a digital signal (it never is). There is plenty of clearance around the port for an over-sized vga cable housing.
Ethernet:
The chip is a Realtek RTL8153, which is stable and well-supported on current operating systems. It has no problems saturating a gigabit connection. In the past I have found that updated drivers direct from Realtek were more stable than the default loaded by Windows. I don't know if that is still the case.
USB ports:
2 Type A 2.0
3 Type A 3.1 gen 1 (5Gb/s)
1 Type C 3.1 gen 1 (data only)
A welcome upgrade from the smaller hubs is that fact that the internal USB hub is now powered. On the other models, I have to be careful about plugging in too many high-power devices (hard drives, SSDs, etc.) Not anymore. I plugged in 4 external drives and ran disk benchmarks on them simultaneously. No issues at all.
SD card reader (USB 3.0)
This is a single device that supports simultaneous use of both cards at once. The cards do not insert flush to the device. They do stick out some, and the full size SD slot is inverted. It must be soldered to the underside of the lower circuit board.
It is a USB 3 interface reader, and can approach the max SD card read rate (104 MB/s) on one card at a time. If you try to copy to/from both cards at once, it will slow down. In my experience this is a common behavior for double card reader chips. If you need to quickly copy a large amount of data directly from one card to another, you may want to consider using a separate reader for the second card.
I don't know what chip is used for this function.
Sound:
Stereo output and mono input. (16 bit, 44.1 or 48kHz). It works well, and sound quality is on par with any other little usb sound card. It only turns on when an audio cable is connected, otherwise it (presumably) isn't using power and won't show up in your device manager. A nice touch, that.
The sound device has a VID of 0x1b3f and a PID of 0x2008 - the USB database says the mfr. is Generalplus Technology Inc. but I couldn't figure out which part it is.
Documentation:
The included manual is a big improvement from previous UTechSmart devices. Not to say the others are bad; they aren't. But this manual does an excellent job of explaining the dock's capabilities and limitations, as well as how to use the various ports. It is also physically larger which helps with the layout of each page and the legibility of some of the diagrams.
Power consumption and delivery:
It supports 100W input, which is the max for USB-C. Any power not used by the dock is passed to the computer connected to Host 2. Power consumption by the internal chips is quite small. The largest power draw will be any higher-power consumption USB devices plugged into it.
All measurements were made using a generic in-line type C power meter.
Single 4k video out without an external power input (i.e. powered from the laptop):
Host 1 to HDMI consumed about 750mW.
Host 2 to HDMI 2 consumed 2.5W. Host 2 to HDMI 3 consumed 3W.
I didn't attempt to measure power draw for the RTL8153 or card reader, but those typically use about 2.5 watt or less.
One thing to be aware of is that some laptops will complain about not having enough power even when they actually do. For example, the Razer Stealth laptop uses a 100W Type C power adapter. Typical idle power draw is a fraction of that. But if I plug the factory adapter into the dock and plug the dock into the laptop, it will instantly complain about not having enough power. Even if it is only using 10W at that moment. I don't worry about it though. T worst case effect would be slower battery charging while cpu & gpu are under max sustained load. I did measure about a 0.8V drop across the included cable at 3A current draw. If the power adapter was supplying 19.8V to the dock, the laptop was seeing 19V at its port. This is within my expectations for a 1 meter cable.
Conclusion (Congrats to you if you actually read this far!):
It's an excellent value for the price, if you need the features it provides. It can work well as a desk-bound docking station or as a travel adapter in a pinch. Make sure that the feature set will match your needs, as there are other hubs out there with different capabilities. If you need fewer features and more portability, this manufacturer's 6 in 1 hub is both smaller and cheaper. If your laptop doesn't support the HBR3 data rate, do the math to make sure that you'll still be able to get the display outputs that you need. If your laptop is limited in that way, one possible alternative would be to combine a 4-lane multiple display adapter with a regular powered USB hub or dock. It is a less elegant solution than this dock (and requires two ports!), but might offer slightly higher overall bandwidth.
UPDATE 07-05-2022: The new one has died after less than 4 months. It starting acting funky (working/ not working) about 2 weeks ago, now it's completely dead. I absolutely hate this thing and give it just 1 star. $99 is a lot on money for 4 months of use. I would NOT recommend this product.
I also preferred the design of this one versus the previous version I owned. Here are the bullet points of what I liked about this newer version:
*Higher power delivery (100watts)
*Better design
*Ability to manage cables better
*rubber bottom keeps the dock in place
*runs cooler than the previous version
*More USB-C ports available
*Quad display supported (versus 3 on the older one)
*3.5mm audio port
*Two gold plated USB-C Cables included
It is made of brushed aluminum with plastic on the top and rubber on the bottom of the dock. It includes two USB-C gold plated cables that look and feel of quality craftmanship. One of the cables is a single USB-C cable and the other cable is a dual USB-C cable.
The 17 in 1 refers to the 3x USB 3.0 ports, 2x USB 2.0 ports, 3x HDMI ports, single VGA port, Micro SD slot, SD slot, 10/1000 (gigabit port), 4x USB-C ports, and single 3.5mm audio jack.
As you can see from my workbench setup in the video, I utilize many electronic devices for work or tinkering, and all of them need charging. Previously I utilized a smaller Utechsmart docking station, however it had a slightly lower power delivery capability. With this newer Utechsmart docking station, I am able to charge all of my devices at once while keeping the wiring better organized.
I utilize a docking station not only for charging multiple devices, but also for the traditional intended use of being able to simply unplug a single cable from my Macbook Pro and leaving everything else plugged in. This makes the ease of portability much higher as I don't have to unplug a bunch of cables each time I need to grab my laptop and go.
Another positive factor is that I was able to remove 2 ugly USB plugs from the wall since I can charge from the docking station rather than the wall.
In comparison to other docking stations with the same features, I noticed that most of the other docking stations were stating that they had "PD 3.0" but the power rating was either 67watts or 87watts, not the 100watts like this one offers. I also noticed that a lot of the other docking stations appeared to be aluminum but were in fact just silver plastic. A few of them also did not include a USB-C cable which was dissapointing.
I have been using this for several weeks now and am pleased with the overall design, the functionality, and convenience it provides. I would definitely recommend this to others.
